  • Jacksonville-Onslow Council for the Arts: www.jaxarts.com
    • Tour the gallery of artists' works, peruse the artisans' gift shop, and enjoy the special performances and classes hosted here by the Arts Council.  Location:  826 New Bridge Street, Jacksonville, NC  28540.  Hours:  Mon.-Fri. 8:30am - 4:30pm.  Ph:  910-455-9840.  Admission:  Free.
BOATING
  • Marina Cafe Riverboat Cruises:  www.TheMarinaCafe.com  
    • Take a cruise on the New River.  Enjoy the scenery and the company on this lovely enclosed riverboat.  Sunset tours run every Friday from Memorial Day through Labor Day (extended through Sept. in 2007).  Private party cruises available any time.  Location:  Bob Beck's Marina Cafe, 110 South Marine Blvd., Jacksonville, NC  28540.  Hours:  Fridays, 6:30-8:00pm.  Ph:  910.938.2002.  Admission: $$
       
  • New River Foundation Eco-Tours:  www.NewRiverFoundation-Onslow.org
    • Experience the beauty of the New River close at hand.  Learn the New River's history and its importance for the area.  See first hand how the New River's health is improving from environmental problems.  Learn about river wildlife, including unique trees, plans, birds, fish and animals.  Canoe or kayak tours (your boat, or theirs) by appointment only (one week's notice recommended).  Location:  Launch from Bob Beck's Marina Cafe, 110 South Marine Blvd., Jacksonville, NC  28540.  Hours:  Saturdays 10:00am-12:00noon, Sundays 1:30-3:30pm.  Ph:  910.478.9727.  Admission:  $10 per person. 
ENVIRONMENTAL EDUCATION SITES
    • This site is a former wastewater treatment plant converted to an environmental education center.  It is the headquarters for the City’s water quality initiatives and will one day house an aquarium.  Today Sturgeon City hosts restored wetlands that help cleanse the waters of Wilson Bay, the first phase of an award-winning park design that provides sweeping vistas of the Wilson Bay and serves as the home to youth and environmental education programs.  Location:  4 Court St., Jacksonville, NC  28540.  Ph:  910-938-6452.
HISTORIC SITES
  • Jacksonville City Hall ~ www.ci.jacksonville.nc.us
    • Visit this new beautifully restored public building that was previously a department store and post office.  Location: 815 New Bridge St., Jacksonville, NC  28540.  Ph:  910-938-5200.
  • Mill Avenue Historic District
    • Take a leisurely drive through this historic district on and around Mill Avenue.  This district consists primarily of late 19th and early 20th century homes.  Note:  These homes are privately owned, and are not open to the public
  • Onslow County Court House
    • First European settlers arrive in Onslow in 1713.  The County was formally established in 1734.  In 1842, the City of Jacksonville was incorporated.  The county dramatically changed in the 1940s with the establishment of military bases.  Be sure to drive by this iconic downtown building with a beautiful cupola.  Location:  625 Court St., Jacksonville, NC  28540.  Ph:  910-347-4717 (Onslow Co.   • Pelletier House & Wantland Spring
    • This house is the oldest standing structure in the City of Jacksonville, dating to the 1820s.  The adjoining spring behind the house dates to the 1730s.  Both are listed on the National Register of Historic Places.  Location:  corner of Old Bridge and Anne Streets, Jacksonville, NC  28540.  For information about periodic tours, contact the Onslow County Historical Society:  Ph:  910-324-5008.
  • Train Depot (B.O.L.D. Office) & Caboose
    • Come see the historic train station and the park now laid on the old rail beds.  On display is a partially restored caboose, recovered locally after found abandoned in the woods.  Location:  421 Court St., Jacksonville, NC  28540.  Ph:  910-937-7222.
  • USO of Jacksonville ~ www.uso-nc.org
    • This landmark is the oldest operating USO in the world, established in 1942.  Amenities include beautiful views of the adjacent New River and Riverfront Park, snack bar, restrooms, pool tables, library, computer room with internet access, several small and one large conference room.  Events and activities held on site regularly.  Location:  9 Tallman St., Jacksonville, NC  28540.  Ph:  910-455-3411.
MILITARY MONUMENTS, MUSEUMS & CEMETERIES
  • Beirut Memorial & Camp Lejeune Memorial Gardens ~ www.beirut-memorial.org
    • This military monument honors those who were killed by the bombing of the Beirut Embassy on October 23, 1983.  View the memorial garden and trees, the bronze statue, and the monument wall engraved with "They Came In Peace."  Location:  Montford Point Road, Jacksonville, NC  28540. 
  • Montford Point Marine Museum ~ www.montfordpointmarines.com
    • The Montford Point Marines Museum honors the first African Americans who entered the United States Marine Corps from 1942-1949 at Montford Point Camp, New River, North Carolina.  The museum, which features the largest collection of photographs, documents, papers, and artifacts to interpret this part of Marine Corps history, is housed on the hallowed grounds of Montford Point Camp.  Location:  East Wing of building M101, Marine Corps Base Camp Johnson, Jacksonville, NC.  Hours:  Tues. & Thurs. 11:00am-2:00pm, 4:00-7:00pm; Sat. 11:00am-4:00pm.  Ph:  910-450-1340.
  • Museum of the Marine ~ www.museumofthemarine.org (COMING SOON!)
    • In the next few years, the Museum of the Marine will bring a world-class museum to Jacksonville, NC that will honor the contributions and sacrifices of Marines, their units, their families, and the Carolina communities that support them by making known the personal stories that reflect the courage and dedication that are the hallmarks of our Nation's history.  Submit your personal stories to the museum online.  Learn more about this future museum on its website, or contact the office staff.   • NC Veterans Cemetery ~ www.doa.state.nc.us/vets/cemetery.htm
    • Visit this Veterans' Cemetery - one of three across the state of North Carolina that honors our fallen military servicemembers.  Location: 110 Montford Point Road, Jacksonville, NC  28540.  Ph:  910-347-4550.
  • The two above monuments will be complemented by the Future Site of the Vietnam Veterans' Memorial and the Museum of the Marine, to be constructed adjacent to these sites.
